His mother came to St. Louis to look for a job while William was continuing to help provide for the family with his brothers. The choice was made for him to work

When old enough he walked with a brother to St Louis from Illinois and got a job making $1.00 a day.  In 1942 he was of age to sign up for the army. In the army after basic training they had guard duty; the guns that they had received had no bullets.  Also during the war he and his platoons helped build the Alcan Highway from Canada to Alaska.  There were times they had to provide food for themselves. There was a bear lurking in the nearby woods that was available as that source of food.
